Don't forget to pick!

2009 Perennial Plant of the Year

The 2009 Perennial Plant of the Year that has been chosen by the Perennial Plant Association is a Japanese forest grass named 'Aureola'. This grass grows 12 to 18 inches tall and about 24 inches wide. It does bloom in late summer to fall, but the flowers are nothing particularly showy.
The grass is cascading with half inch wide bright yellow blades with green stripes. In fall the blades take on a pinkish hue. In cold climates this plant will die back during the winter. It is hardy in zones 5-8 and in warmer climates may be evergreen. Forest grass does best with 4 to 6 hours of sun or part shade. I have tried forest grass in my gardens and I really like this plant. The grass just gets better each year it grows and it is far easier to maintain than larger grasses. Forest grass is very colorful in any perennial garden or Japanese garden. I like this plant added into gardens with Hostas, Heuchera (coral bells) or Tiarellas (foam flowers) because it give a different texture and great color to the shade garden.
